About Us

SOS is a volunteer organization with a goal of providing a holistic

shelter of body, soul, and mind to attendees of homeless shelters

through the gift of live music.

Today's homeless shelters provide a temporary solution for the

permanent necessity of shelter.  Whether from career

misfortunes, various forms of probations, or a mishandling of

life's responsibilities, the homeless shelters are being filled with

individuals who need the proper inspirations and encouragements

to get back on their feet.  Music has been an inspirational

language that has universally transcended all barriers of cultures.

Music is a rare medication that alleviates the deepest roots of

symptoms to provide an inner sanctum of peace.  There must be a

partnership of physical shelter and inner shelter to ensure overall well

being.

 Objectives and Outcomes

Songs of Shelter allows the attendees of homeless shelters too

look deeper into their current life situations.  Emotions and

feelings are all a part of human existence.  At times, individuals

are unable to properly express what they are feeling or going

through.  Communication is a skill that takes time to develop.  Over

the course of history, there are many ways of communicating

messages, and music has proven to be extremely effective.  The

attendees have many things to share and communicate, but we all

may not be able to speak similar languages of speech or thought.

Music allows such expression of communication possible.

Songs of Shelter takes the music of the SOS volunteer to connect

with the attendees and share encouraging messages. SOS

programs will partner up with existing shelters in hope to bring a

holistic sheltering experience of body, soul, and mind.  Depending

on the respective shelter's program, a meal may be served,

followed by bedtime.  SOS volunteers would coordinate a time before

bedtime to share their music of encouragement with the entire group

of attendees.  After the short program, the SOS program is

concluded.  This is a simple addition to the shelter's night that

makes immense impact on the overall ambience.  The emphasis on

partnership and cooperation with the respective shelter staff and SOS

is crucial for the continual success of the program.

History

In November 2005, a volunteer group went to a REST Shelter in

Chicago to serve a dinner. Upon conversations with the men at the

shelter, the group felt convicted to share an acapella rendition of

a familiar Christmas carol (Silent Night).  This unforgettable

experience made an immediate impact on the attendees.  There

was an ambience of peace, delight, and hope. On March 24, 2006,

another group of volunteers participated in a similar program at

the rest shelter.  As the evening approached closure, the volunteer

group shared an inspirational music set.  The rooms of 65+ men

were silenced with an appreciation of the encouraging music

shared.  In response to these experiences, birthed the SOS vision

of sharing the gifts of music to inspire others in need.
